Understanding Your Medicare Options
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people
aged 65 and older and for individuals with certain
disabilities or chronic conditions. Original Medicare is the
foundation of this coverage, offering access to essential
hospital and medical services through Part A and Part B. It
is widely accepted by providers across the country and
helps cover many important healthcare needs. However, it
does not cover all healthcare costs. Many people choose to
explore additional coverage options to help fill in the gaps.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) combines Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) with added benefits like prescription drug coverage (Part D), dental, vision, and hearing services. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage to lower medication costs. While it’s not included in Original Medicare, it can be added through a standalone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan. A monthly premium is required for Part D coverage.
Medicare Supplement, or Medigap insurance, works with Original Medicare to help cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and copays. However, it doesn’t include prescription drug coverage, so many people also enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to pay for Original Medicare?
Yes. Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A, but everyone pays a monthly premium for Part B. You’ll also have deductibles and coinsurance for care.
Is Original Medicare enough by itself?
Original Medicare covers a lot, but it doesn’t pay for everything. There’s no limit on out-of-pocket costs, and it doesn’t include drug, dental, or vision coverage. Many people choose to add other plans to get more protection.
Can I see any doctor with Original Medicare?
Yes. You can visit any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. There are no networks or referrals required in most cases.
Will Original Medicare cover prescriptions?
No. Drug coverage isn’t included. You’ll need to add a separate Medicare Part D plan if you want help paying for medications.
What costs will I have to pay out of pocket?
You’ll pay deductibles, copayments, and 20% of the cost for most Part B services. There’s also no yearly limit on how much you can spend.
